How did we get here?
Our owner, Erkki Tommila, began his career as stand builder at the early age of 16. By 1965, he was funding his studies by assembling stands for the Finnish Ahlstrom Corporation, some of them designed by the famous Tapio Wirkkala. He graduated with a Master of Building. In 1977, after language studies in Sweden, England, Spain and Switzerland, he and his wife Beatrice founded Tomwood AG, a commercial agency for Finnish wood products.
By 1980, Tomwood AG was also engaged as a stand contractor. The first major exhibition client was the Swiss Bankers Association, for which the company realized two large pavilions yearly over a period of more than 10 years. From 1981, the Finnish Foreign Trade Association regularly entrusted us with numerous projects largely in Europe but also within Switzerland. Gradually the list of important customers grew. Companies came from all industries, like Nokia, for example. We were responsible for a large part of their trade shows and events between 1987 and 1995. The first two-storey stand was built for them in 1987 and the first three-storey in 1991. Both were for the respective ITU Telecom World exhibitions in Geneva.
In 1992 we transferred the exhibition department of Tomwood AG into the newly founded Tomexpo AG. While Tomwood AG successfully established itself as a local lumber store, Tomexpo AG specialized in individual, large-scale and multi-storey stands, as well as smaller projects. In time, Asian agencies became aware of our performance; since the late 1990s we can count many companies from Japan and Korea as regular customers.
Thanks to our expertise, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) appointed Tomexpo AG as Management Consultants in 2002, for the implementation of the Telecom Village at the ITU Telecom World 2003 in Geneva.
Tomexpo AG’s goal is to provide the exhibitor with a professional all-round service, not only with an on-time delivery of a high quality stand, but also to assist with all matters that may arise in the course of an exhibition project. Our customers thank us with decades of loyalty.
